Toyota Fortuner has dominated the sales in its segment right from its launch in the year 2008. The new 2012 Toyota Fortuner has sharper finish and the interiors are plusher than before. This updated Fortuner is likely to be launched sometime in early 2012. The engine is likely to remain the same. The SUV has been launched for sale in Thailand markets and is expected to enter India markets in the first half of 2012. The new design gives the Fortuner much more impressive and aggressive nose. The new stretched head lamps and restyled bonnet are other highlights.

The Toyota Fortuner is equipped with a diesel engine. The engine is front and longitudinal installed. The common-rail, direct injection, turbo-diesel engine is equipped with four cylinders in-line with 2982cc. The Bore/stroke is 96.0/ 103.0 with a power of 168bhp at 3600rpm. The Torque is 35kgm at 1400-3400rpm. The vehicle comes with 4-speed automatic transmission gear box and five speed manual transmission.

The changes are clearly visible right from the front lights to the new design for the alloy wheels and the new clear-lens tail lamps. The grille is larger with the angular headlights. The bumpers have also not been spared from the makeover which reminisces you of the Land Cruiser. The intercooler on the bonnet gets more oxygen with larger intake. The overall shape of the Toyota Fortuner exteriors still remains intact.

Inside the cabin Toyota Fortuner has a new centre console with a six-inch touch-screen similar to the one on the Corolla and new Innova. This enables you to control the audio system, new DVD player and the reverse camera. The drive wheel is now equipped with Bluetooth telephony function with a new look as well.

This time the Toyota Fortuner on the inside is looking more attractive with the large touch screen display. The dashboard still has the Innova feel but feels a lot more up market and lives well up to the premium nature of the Fortuner.

The Toyota Fortuner comes equipped with airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with ABS. All passengers except the middle rear passenger get a three-point seat belt. Toyota Fortuner 2012 Ride and Handling

The Toyota Fortuner is not very fortunate with the automatic gear box. The auto gear is not up to the mark and this really comes as a shock for a vehicle of this class and caliber. The option of a six speed auto gear could have set the fortunes rolling to say the least, and we hope Toyota is listening on this account.

Having said that, the four speed automatic offers decent drivability. Initially the car takes some time to rev up but it does get going without too much of a fuss. The gear shift is smooth as knife through butter and surely there is no doubting the refinement of the gearbox. The overtaking is a normal task with its quick kick down to a lower gear and allows you to overtake with considerable ease. On the top speeds however you are left wanting for more.

The new Fortuner comes with a 3-litre diesel engine. It produces a power of 168bhp with 35kgm torque. The kerb weight is 1955kg with a length, width and height of 4695/1840/1850mm.

The Toyota Fortuner is a SUV with no pretentions about it. It has all the right ingredients with a good road presence, strong performance, space and practicality. The only black spot could be the engine which takes some time to come to terms. The body-on-frame design makes for a solid strength but does not give the same sophisticated ride and handling of a Honda CR-V.
