Volkswagen is derived from the German word folks-wagon which means people’s car. Volkswagen is a German based automobile manufacturing company. It is the original marquee of Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen (VW) was launched in the year 1937.It is now one of the world’s most respected automobile manufacturers. The Beetle was the first car launched by Volkswagen. Volkswagen entered into the Indian market in 2007. It established the Volkswagen India Private Limited (VIPL) in the same year. It is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group Sales India Private Limited that assembles, manufactures and distributes Volkswagen vehicles in India. VIPL operates a manufacturing plant in Chakan near to Pune which has capacity of producing 1, 10,000 vehicles per year.
Volkswagen India Group is represented by three brands in India, Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda. Each brand has its own character and operates as an independent entity in the Indian market. It is completing 10 years of its journey in India in the upcoming year. It operates 60 production plants around the world. In total more than 370,000 employees produce more than 26,600 vehicles or are involved in vehicle-related services each working day.
Volkswagen India Private Limited at present has 43 dealerships in 37 cities across India. It plans to expand the number of dealers to 200 by end of 2012. The Volkswagen Group sold more than 4 million vehicles in the period from January to July. 4.16 As against to 2009’s 3.65, a growth of 13.7 percent. The four million vehicles were delivered to customers during the first seven months of the current year. In July, the Volkswagen Group delivered 572,200 vehicles worldwide.
Volkswagen India Future Plans
Company plans to introduce the ambitious small car project of the European car major Volkswagen. The price of this car will be around 3 lacs. It is already created a curiosity in India. It has some of the best features as compared to other cars present in the small car segment and will be placed below Volkswagen Polo. It will compete with models like Chevrolet Spark, Maruti Wagon R and Hyundai Santro in the sub-compact car segment. We can expect this car in market by January 2011. It plans to introduce Volkswagen Phaeton 2WD in December 2010 and also it has a plan to introduce Volkswagen Tiguan 2WD in February 2011.
Volkswagen India models manufactured or mssembled locally are Volkswagen Polo, Volkswagen Jetta, Volkswagen Passat, and Volkswagen Vento. The imported models are Volkswagen Beetle, Volkswagen Phaeton, Volkswagen Touareg.
Volkswagen India offers 5 new car models in Luxury segment, 1 in Midsize segment, 1 in Small segment in India.
