Skoda Auto India Private Limited is an Indian subsidiary of the famous automobile manufacturer of Europe, the Volkswagen Group. It was founded as Laurin & Klement, in Czech Republic, in 1895.As like most automobile manufacturing companies Skoda also started off by manufacturing bicycles. The company merged with Skoda Manufacturers, It was one of the leading companies in Czechoslovakia, in 1924.The fall of communism with the Velvet Revolution brought great changes to Czechoslovakia, so the most of the companies were privatized. Skoda automobile company was searching for a partner to improve their business globally, after running into some financial problems. So Skoda merged with Volkswagen in April 1991. Skoda became the fourth brand of the Volkswagen Group.

Skoda entered Indian market almost a decade back and still giving a tuff competition to others cars. It entered the Indian market with ‘Skoda Octavia’ in 2002. Octavia is still sold in India but sadly Skoda hasn't updated it in all these years. Octavia's Estate version and the Octavia Combi could not attract attention of the consumers and hence these were withdrawn by the company.  Skoda has an assembly plant in the Shendra, the outskirts of Aurangabad, in the western Indian state of Maharashtra which was established in 2001 as Skoda India Private Ltd. It was Skoda's first manufacturing unit in Asia. Skoda have several plants around the world including one in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Skoda automaker sells its cars through around 73 dealers in 51 cities in India. Skoda cars are known for their world-class build quality and safety features. The company currently manufactures its cars in the Aurangabad plant. Skoda plans to increase its dealerships to 100 by the end of 2011. Skoda Auto India recently announced a sales growth of 24% for the month of August 2010 over July 2010. Skoda Auto India’s total sales for August 2010 stood at 1511 units. Skoda has registered a growth in the sales of its flagship car the Skoda Superb and the New Skoda Laura.

Skoda plans to launch its first SUV the ‘Skoda Yeti’ in November 2010.it also plans to introduce ‘Skoda Laura RS’ in March 2011.
