The BMW X5 is a 5-door, mid-size luxury crossover Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) sold by the German automaker BMW. The BMW X5 is available in an all-wheel drive (AWD) version. The BMW X5 has been introduced to the Indian market in 2007. The first-generation BMW X5 was given a face-lift in 2004, 2005, and 2006. However, it is only the second-generation BMW X5 that has been brought to India. The X5 gives tough competition to the likes of Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Audi Q7.
BMW X5 Engine Specifications: BMW X5 comes with 4.8-litre petrol and 3.0-litre diesel engine options making 350bhp and 231bhp respectively. Both options provide astounding motive force to the BMW X5, but unsurprisingly, the petrol demolishes the diesel. However, the diesel with its higher torque output is more drivable. Combined with the ‘tap for shift’ gear selector of the six-speed automatic gearbox, the driving experience is what you would expect from a BMW, and defies all SUV conventions. The engine is smooth and refined and sounds really sporty as you go all the way to redline.
BMW X5 Exteriors: BMW X5 exudes an aura of style, power, and comfort. Its front fascia is adorned by a distinct body-colored bumper with integrated fog lights, the traditional twin-kidney grille with chrome-finished vertical slats, and eagle-eyed xenon adaptive headlights with auto-leveling. Both the variants of BMW X5 feature body-colored exterior door and tail-gate handles. Some exterior features standard on BMW X5 variants include power outside mirrors, intermittent rain-sensing windshield wipers, rear window wiper/washer, and roof rails. Power windows, power door locks, and vehicle and key memory are also standard on both the variants. The 3.0d comes with 18-inch light alloy wheels. The option of comfort access keyless entry is also available on the BMW X5.
BMW X5 Ride and Handling: BMW X5 sets the benchmark for SUV handling and agility. The steering feels heavy but precise. Though it might not be traffic-friendly, it is a boon for high-speed driving. Despite its size, BMW X5 handles like a dream thanks to its Adaptive Drive system – basically active anti-roll bars that stop the car from leaning excessively around corners. However, this is an extra-cost option. BMW’s ride is stiff and you feel most of the undulations that our roads dish out. But it is not very bad and a small price to pay for the level of handling and grip that is on offer.
BMW X5 Safety Features: BMW X5 comes loaded with plenty of safety features to take care of its occupants'' safety. It has a dual front-impact airbag Supplemental Restraint System with dual-threshold and dual-stage deployment, 3-point safety belts and head restraints at all seating positions, a roll-over sensor that triggers airbags and safety belt pre-tensioners in the event of a roll-over, a steering column crash system, a central locking system and Coded Driveaway Protection, and an alarm system with key-head remote operation interior motion detector.
BMW X5 Interiors: The front seats of BMW X5 are very comfortable and hold you in place even during hard driving. The chunky steering wheel feels good to hold and it also has controls for various functions. The iDrive knob falls to hand easily and controls nearly everything in the car, from the climate control to the stereo. BMW X5’s rear seats are supportive but not as spacious as, say an Audi Q7. There is also a lack of lateral support, but the seat is good for seating three abreast. Then there is that huge sunroof that provides an airy feel to the whole cabin. Luggage space is good too, though not as good as the Q7. BMW X5 comes loaded with all the goodies you would expect – powered seats, a massive sunroof, Six CD changer with MP3 player, xenon headlamps, climate control, automatic wipers, parking sensors, multi-function steering wheel and iDrive.
