Maruti Suzuki WagonR is the Indian avatar of the Suzuki WagonR. The WagonR launched in December 1999 has had three generations so far. The new WagonR is built on a new platform, has loads of interior space, and features like under-seat tray as well. The exteriors are no longer boxy and look like a true hatchback with a bit of height increase. The Maruti WagonR is the next best seller after the Alto in India. The new WagonR comes with well known K series engine. This K10B petrol engine is mated to a 5 speed manual transmission gearbox produces a power of 67 hp at 6,200 rpm and a torque of 90 Nm at 3,200 rpm. It also comes in a LPG version which runs on petrol and LPG.

 

Maruti WagonR Exteriors

 

The Maruti WagonR is instantly recognizable with its one of a kind design not seen on any other hatchback in the Indian market. From the rear the Maruti WagonR looks like a van. The curves on the Maruti WagonR are well complemented by the tinted headlights which gives it a very elegant look. The outer body is quite shiny body along with the body colored bumpers and ORVM’s makes the car sportier. The fog lamps serve their purpose and keep your vision clear even in the worst of lights.  The ground clearance is perfect for the Indian roads. Maruti WagonR is loaded with the exterior features like Swept-back Headlamps, Sporty Tall Lamps, Aggressive Front Grille, Wide Bumpers, Flared Fenders, Clear Side Indicator, Stylish Tall Gate and Glass, Outside Rear View Mirror, Tinted Glass, Wheel Hub Cap, Front Wiper (2 speed +intermittent), Radical Tyres and Roof Rails.

 

Maruti WagonR Engine

 

The Maruti WagonR petrol variant has a 998 cc engine which is BSIV compliant. The petrol engine delivers 68 PS at 6200 rpm and the LXi CNG delivers a power of 59 PS at 6200 rpm. The Maruti WagonR petrol delivers a torque of 90 Nm at 3500 rpm and 77 Nm at 3500 rpm for the LXi CNG variant. The LXi DUO –LPG mode delivers 85 Nm at 3500 rpm and 90 Nm at 3500 rpm for the LXi DUO – Gasoline model.

 

Maruti WagonR Interiors

 

On the inside for a small hatchback the car is nothing short of space and is well complemented by the large dashboard as well. The dashboard is just about okay however there are others in the segment that comes with a better quality. The car is also quite practical with push type cup holders just ahead of the front air-con vents to keep your favorite drinks, rear parcel tray, a 60:40 split rear seat, storage space below the front passenger seat, good rubber covered console to keep your mobile. On the flipside, the large storage spaces above and below the glove box and below the steering wheel is now missing. The boot has also shrunk to 180litres. The speedometer cluster now looks speedy which is digital. The integrated audio kit with an Aux-in feature on the VXi looks fairly good, but we do miss steering mounted controls.

The Maruti WagonR safety features include Intelligent Computerized Anti-theft System, Side-Impact Beams, Collapsible Steering Column, 8? Booster-assisted Brakes, Child-proof Rear Door Locks, Halogen Headlamps, Front & Rear Seat Belt (3 point ELR), Ability to Diagnose Breakdown, Unique High Mount Stop Lamp and Headlamp leveling Device are more than good.

The Maruti WagonR colors come in shades of silky silver, glistening grey, superior white, midnight black, breeze blue, firebrick red and bakers chocolate.

 

Maruti WagonR Ride and Handling

 

The dynamic 3-point suspension geometry in the Maruti WagonR ensures superior ride and handling and the new cable-type transmission guarantees this. The 5-speed manual transmission makes sure the gear shift is smooth as knife passing through butter. The new WagonR is surely a lot more stable and in spite of the body roll, the car is feels grounded. The power steering offers very little feedback and feels dead on the straight lines at high speeds. The soft suspension is great for low speeds but has a tendency to pitch, especially at the rear on uneven surfaces. For the city ride that requires low speeds and handling the car is the perfect companion. The high stance makes for good on road visibility and gives you a bird’s eye view of the lanes ahead.

Maruti WagonR has exterior dimensions of length- 3595 mm, width- 1495 mm (VXi with side moulding) and 1475 mm (LXi & LX without side moulding), height- 1700 mm (VXi & LXi with roof rails) and 1670mm (LX without roof rails) with a wheelbase of 2400 mm. The ground clearance is 162 mm.

Maruti WagonR Models

 

Maruti WagonR LX DUO: This is the base model of the Maruti WagonR, packed with 1.1L petrol engine with 5 speed manual transmission gearbox. It is packed with LPG kit.

 

Maruti WagonR LXI DUO: This variant is also packed with LPG kit. It offers some additional features as compared to the previous one that are door trim fabric, chrome finish in instrumental panel, silver finish in inside door handles, electronic power steering, front power windows, driver seatbelt warning lamp, etc.

 

Maruti WagonR LX: This is the base model for the new WagonR, packed with 1.0L petrol engine and 5 Speed manual transmission gearbox and many comfort features.

 

Maruti WagonR LXi: This is the upgraded version of WagonR LX with extra features like door trim fabric, chrome finish in instrumental panel, silver finish in inside door handles, electronic power steering, front power windows, driver seatbelt warning lamp, etc.

 

Maruti WagonR Vxi: This is the top most model with extra features like tilted steering, rear power windows, electrical ORVM, front passenger under seat tray, keyless entry, dual srs airbag (optional), ABS (optional), security system, body colored outside door handles, etc.

 

Maruti WagonR VXi with ABS: This variant offers same features as "Maruti WagonR BS IV"; additional features are airbags and ABS.

Maruti WagonR vs Ford Figo: Maruti WagonR comes at a lesser price compared to the Ford Figo. The Ford Figo is a slightly a better car in terms of the reliability and build quality. The Ford Figo also looks better and delivers a better mileage than the Maruti WagonR.

 

Maruti WagonR vs Hyundai i10: Hyundai i10 is the better looking car and the Maruti WagonR has no chance in front of the Hyundai i10. Maruti WagonR is cheaper compared to the Hyundai and also delivers a better mileage compared to the Hyundai i10.
